How to Be More Sociable
Not everyone is great at being social, and to make matters worse, there are a lot of folks who struggle with social anxiety.
If you are one of those people who are not keen about going out, for reason being you’re not great at handling social gatherings, don’t worry. There are tips and tricks that you can employ towards gaining more social success.
The followings can be applied right now, and you’ll find yourself at greater ease.
- Find Utilizable Environmental Props
If you’re going to a social gathering where there are drinks, get one. This doesn’t have to be alcoholic, it can be anything. The goal here is to utilize whatever is within your environment as potential props for conversation starters. If you have a beer bottle, a red cup, or even a soda can, you have an opening statement for just about anyone.
Take for instance, if you see someone without a drink, tell them that they should try this “apple martini” or whatever over by the bar. You can also ask them what they’re drinking. From there, you’ll get more accustomed to the social vibe and less uncomfortable about approaching people.
- Build Up Arsenal of Conversational Stories
Before you go to any party, look up funny anecdotes and practice them. Say them to yourself in the mirror. Commit them to memory. There’s no shame in reciting a story that you read somewhere to be used.
Go up to a group, hang out, and when there’s a quick silence, ask if they’ve heard about the interesting story you’re about to tell.
For example, “Did you hear about the llama escape?”, and of course they most likely haven’t, and that’s where you talk about it. This is just one example, but the goal is to have at multiple stories in your conversational arsenal.
- Adopt a Host or Hostess Mentality
Going back to the drink element, ask people if they are having a good time, and if they need anything – as if you were the host. You’ll be surprised by how a little hospitality can go, especially when it comes to meeting new people. Test this out and you’ll be chatting it up with others faster than the wallflowers with drinks in hand.
The goal here is to make sure that you stick around. Introduce yourself, ask how they are doing, and if you can get them anything, and upon return, you’ll be able to have a short chat. It’s that easy.
